Plans a small wedding  |  Tips for choosing a color scheme

When it comes to picking a color scheme, there are many directions you can go, so that can feel overwhelming. We are here to help guide our couples to help them choose the best color scheme for their big day. There is more to it than simply picking your favorite colors! There are many hues and factors that come into play
how to plan a small wedding
  • Time of year: Consider the time of year when picking your colors. You may want to play up the hues of fall with deep purples and burnt orange. If you are having your ceremony outside, consider what the trees will look like that time of year and what is in bloom. You can play up those colors by using them as your contracting colors so your photos are cohesive. This takes us to our next point: flowers!

  • Preferred flowers: Certain flowers are more expensive or simply unavailable during certain times of the year. We’d recommend talking to your florist or picking the types of flowers you’ll have available for your budget. From there, you can see what colors will best match those flowers. Once you have a color or two picked out, the rest start to fall into place and things like picking out napkins become much easier.

  • Contrasting colors: Once you pick a main color or two, it’s time to pick a contrasting color to make the main color POP. There are online color wheels available to showcase what this could be and look like if you want to play around and see how they look. The fun part of pops of color is you can add it into the bouquets, as the envelope liner, in your jewelry and even lipstick. The possibilities are endless!

  • Matching the ceremony site/ reception location: Take into consideration the ceremony site and reception space.  For example, if you’re hosting your reception at a restaurant with red decor, you might want to avoid green as a main color (unless it's Christmas time!)

  • Pick a color that is “you”: Your wedding day is all about your love as a couple. So pick colors that speak to your relationship and that you both like. If you’re planning to hang up a photo of the wedding party in your home, you might want to pick a color that won't clash with your living room.

  • Include neutrals: Is your wedding dress ivory, white, or blush? This is a good starting point for your neutrals. Most linens and chairs come in these options so once you have the dress, it will come easily! Neutrals can also include metallics like silver and gold if you like sparkle!
